Well, I have a paddletail newt, and I really like him. He's entertaining and fun, and his care is not very hard. He eats frozen bloodworm chunks, and lives in a ten gallon tank. There is one thing about paddletails, though, and that is that if you want more than one you need at least about a fifteen gallon tank, as they are very terretorial.

They all have their merits, I think. It might be easier to find out which species you have access to and ask about them.

well, if i was you i'd look up the various species (including caresheets) on this site and look at how much time, space, money etc you have to devote to your new pet. Also bear in mind things such as the fire salamander will be shy and mainly nocturnal, so choose carefully and remember that a newt or salamander is a long term commitment. Enjoy!

What town do you live in with a great petstore like that??

Of all the ones you listed I like Emperor newts best. I have a pair and they are so interactive.
They come to the window for food and sometimes they even run to me!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
