I found a very small newt maybe. I will try and post some pictures later. It is very short, probably two inches; its underside is mostly light pink, around the throat and head seems to be more red. The top of its body is a light pink with black/grey dots in a spotty pattern. It has black eyes with red skin around them. The tail is striped and I counted five toes on each leg.

It is quite dry where I live I've never seen or heard of newts or salamanders living in this area. I found it in the bathtub crawling around so I caught him and put him in a large clear plastic bowl with a lid. I put some potting soil in the bowl and kinda drizzled water on half of the soil. I also put a gatorade cap of water in there. I put some sticks and stuff in a way where it could hide if it wants. I think I poked enough small holes in the lid to keep it well ventilated. I wouldn't mind keeping it if I could figure out how to take care of it properly.

I suspect it's a lizard (reptile), not a newt (amphibian).

Either way post a pic because if its a newt or salamander it may be in danger.

Lizards dont need to be wet though so if it's a lizard it should be ok, just let it go after it drinks some water.

But first we need that picture.

I took it to the pet store. It's a mediterranean gecko.

Yeah id release it, but yeah the gecko should be allright.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
