Hello all, I was wondering if you completely enclose your tanks to stop axies escaping, or is this not necessary with them?

Thanks,

I have heard they can jump out (rarely tho). With mine I don't have a lid but I have left the water 2 inches from the top as I heard that was enough. Others may correct me if I am wrong tho...

When I first got mine they were very easily startled, after I put in some live river shrimp my female got startled and she shot out of the water, if the cover hadn't have been on she would have fallen out. I am sure this is quite a natural reaction, but thankfully doesn't happen very often.

I have heard of several cases where Axolotl jumped out of a tank.
I am shure that they do not do it willingly but if something startles them they can gain a lot of speed and may swim up the walls of the tank. If they are fast enough, they even jump out of the water.

I either use a lid or leave the upper 7-10 cm of the tank without water.

ok, thanks for the advice :) maybe I should put some mesh on the top of the lid? I have a clearseal tank, which has a plastic lid, which I have cut a big rectangle out of to allow light and air. Does anyone else use mesh like this?

Thanks!

The only time they try to escape is when the water is bad. I put a lid on mine though just in case. :D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
