we have had our axololt for about 4 months now and it used to eat really well and has grown well.
it gets fed every 2 days a mixture of crickets and mealworms with crushed heads. the water is partialy cleaned regularyand we add de chlorinator and there is a small filter in with it. everything was fine until a couple of weeks ago when it stopped eating and shows no interest in food at now. we are really worried please can you advise us. Thank you
 
have you tried different foods?
lots of people feed theirs earth worms.
i feed mine blood worm prawns and the occasional piece of liver or beef heart.
 
i have just been to look at it again and it didn't look to happy yesterday but today it s whole head has swollen up and also it looks like it has an air bubble in its gentitals. it is a pink with dark eyes and it now has lots of red visible veins along its side....oh no.
 
Can you post a pic mate? I don't know what's up - but there are plenty of knowledgeable people on this forum.
 
i have just looked again and the bottom of the feet are bright red as well, the face is so puffy that the eyes are sunken, hope the pics can help. thank you for taking time to look. :D

Do you have gravel in the tank? The swollen genital area makes me suspect impaction.

Put the axolotl in the refrigerator. That's the only "first aid" I can recommend. This may improve it's condition, or not, but it can't do any harm.
 
i agree i would definately pop him in the fridge in some dechlorinated water, dont forget to cover the tub with something dark to stop light and temp fluctuations.and dont forget to pop some water in there with him for water changes.
impaction would be my guess aswell but that is a ll it would be imafraid is a guess.
fridging can only help him relax and hopefully pass something if it is stuck.

Hello, thank you so very much for taking the time to answer my plea! i will try fridging, what do you suggest as a gravel substitute? :D
 
either sand or bare bottom,
both are easier to clean and wont fill axie with rubble [lol]
i have sand in with my adults and half and half in with my babies. sand is held back by large pebbles so it looks quite cool.

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
