Heyy,

For the past 3 years or so I've had a funny obsession with axolotls, and a few weeks back I found out they could be kept as pets. I'm hoping to get some this week or next and have been reading up on them.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips that I might have missed reading through websites?

I'm greatly looking forward to becoming an owner of some of the strangest creatures i've encountered.

Have you kept an aquarium before? If not, then there are a lot of aquarium basics you need to learn.

Other tips: keep cool, no gravel.

Just to be boring then , I read throught the threads on the forum...and sometimes for a change I go as far back as you can and read those too. !!The basics I've found most useful is the tank set ups..cycle the tank ideally first , choose iether sand or bare bottom, live or plastic plants and filter types. It took forever for me to even begin to understand the cycling process, but in time it has sunk in !!

Best tip,

Follow the advise on this site.

Then with the exception of acts of God or Nature you will raise healthy happy axolotls.

Good Luck

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
