Hello all, does anyone know how long Axolotls can remember things for? I know with goldfish it's been proven to be about 3 months - I thought that given how much Axies have been studied, someone might know.

Thanks!

I must admit I thought a goldfish's memory was far less..more in the seconds rather than months ( much like mine at the moment!!)

The often quoted urban legend is that a goldfish has a three second memory. Of course this is not true and individual goldfish can actually learn trained behaviors and retain them for some time. As for the axolotl memory, I'm not sure. Most of the research being done with them is genetic or in relation to their regenerative abilities as far as I know. I don't think that they are frequently used as psychological test subjects.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
