Hi ALL
Just a quick ques
need to go to brisbane for a funeral
will be gone 4 days
i have just done 20% tank change
all water parameters ok
feed my two babies
will do spot clean just before i get picked up
water temp is 14 to 16%
will they be ok for 4 days with out any food
on a prior thread i have stated they tend to float every other day
but since then i have come across a large number of small rocks pebles in tank/i have removed on site
i think this was a problem with last owner
my kids got me these funny axies via give away site in local paper
last owner didnt know how to look after them
as i didnt till reading this site
my friend is axie breeder but as we all know large numbers of any animal for a short time is different to animals that we care for
i have wrapped my tank in polyurethane foam
it is keeping water temps at very good level eg 14 to 16 %
as i have read got tea towel over lid
all is dark and they seem to love it
i have a female white and a wild type black male
both very very love e dovee at the moment
have just had a pile of eggs witch i gave away
i have asked my kids to not feed them
as i think a spell with out food might do them good
eg? getting rid of all in side them /being small rocks
i have them in a 3 foot tank
no gravel just bare bottom and huge rocks and pvc pipes and fresh and fake plants
what i am manily asking will they be ok with out food for 4 days
i only feed earth worms and every so often blood worms and pellets
i can not think of anything more
if u think they are in danger please reply
and ill passs it on to kids

I think you have covered every thing I can think of!. Your axolotl should be fine for that spell of time..mine have gone a little over a week, however I did come back to my first batch of eggs and the male was munching away on them when I put the light on to see how they where! I feed mine well the morning of departure..and then spot clean, I have tended top leave them some live river shrimp for a treat, but thats me being soft!!. When I return I find them some worms and feed as normal.

Hi Catherine,

Four days is fine to leave your axies without food. I would just make sure your water parameters are good on the morning you leave.

You sound like you have prepared well the rest is in the lap of the gods.

Good Luck

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
