I've been having problems with my axies living together.
A few weeks ago one seemed to accidently damage the other's leg and I had to take him to the vet, who amputated the bad leg.
Today, I caught them full on fighting in the tank!!!!!! They were really going at each other and I had to split them up. As one of them only has one front leg now he came off worse and now has another damaged front leg!! It's not as bad as the other one was but looks sore all the same! I've put some plastic in the tank as a temporary measure and going to get a proper tank seperater tomorrow. Not sure if there's anything further I can do! Any advice?
Appreciate your help!!
Thank you

How big is the tank? How many hiding spaces do you have? How often do you feed?

the tank is 3ft x 1ft x 18 inches.
have 2 main hidey holes for them
Feed them once every 2 days.

I had this problem with two of mine previously I would separate them for a while long enough at least for them to recover physically. Mine are back together again now and dont get on fantastically well but put up with each other (both seem to get on well with my other male axie they are both female) this too came about when one was under the weather the most helpfull thing I found was providing plenty of plants and creating hidy holes out of them (blocking corners or entraances to caves however it makes feeding harder)

Your tank size is quite good for 2 axies. Separation is an obvious solution. If you do want to have them live back together at some point, I'd recommend adding more hiding places of various sizes and shapes, and packing the tank with live and/or artificial plants.

Here is one of my favorite (cheap) ways to create hiding places.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll get some plant pots for them this week. I separated them this morning with a tank divider I got from the aquarium shop and they seem fine. i'll see how they go before i let them together again, don't want them fighting again!
Thanks again

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
