Just a quicky to say HI to everyone out there ! I found this site by browsing and it has helped me with a problem my sons Axalotl has which is bloating. I read that you can massage the tummy area of the axalotl which will relieve any gas if anyone knows how I can do this without hurting s/he (not sure which) please advise me. Thanks !

hi and welcome to the site,
im afraid i cant help you on that one, but im sure you will get plenty of help real soon.
i know there are several threads on here relating to bloating though, so if you have the patience you could have a good read.

Welcome, Leah. I've moved your post to the axolotl help area of the forum, as you are more likely to get replies here.

In most cases, bloat is caused by a fluid build-up, not gas. Where did you read about massage? And can you describe HOW bloated the animal is? Just slightly enlarged, or blown up like a balloon-animal?

I would NOT recommend massage unless you are sure the animal has gas, not fluid bloat or eggs or gravel impaction!

Here is an article about bloat:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
