Hi all, my baby Axie swims at the top of the tank a lot. He/she is about 10cm long and eating well, is he happy? He/she also has a rather full tummy from last nights meal lol.

Is the axie also on the bottom some of the time? Is it swimming in a leisurely manner, or frantically?

Sounds normal, then. If plenty of plants and hiding places are provided, it may choose to spend more time on the bottom.

Mine have a lovely terracotta plant pot to hide in...I spent a silly ammount of time trying to make a nice sized doorway for them to go through and worked my way through many pots to get the desired effect but they refuse to use it! The things we do for these little guys!!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
