Hey

I have kept two Chinese FBN for one year now, Flipp and Flopp (think its a male and a female..), and the female has gotten a lot fatter since I got her (good news I guess)! Perhaps she was just thin when I bought her in the pet store, but is it possible that she could be gravid?

I think I got a female and a male, because "Flopp" the female, is a lot fatter than "Flipp", the male - also the cloaca is different - which is obvious signs of sexing. I'm posting some pictures as well, say what you think please, if she is gravid, fat or whatever.

They are eating chopped earthworms 2-3 times a week, different days every week. should I possibly feed them more often or is it fine to feed them on that routine?

Could Flipp be a bit thin, by the way? He is a bit shy when it comes to food - he seem to have problems eating chopped small earthworms, but he is eating now and then.

Your female does have a typical gravid shape. It's possible that she's just fat, but also possible she's gravid. The male looks like an OK weight. He could be fatter, but he's not too thin.

Hey Jennewt, thanks for the answer.

I will keep an eye on the male then. And watch out for FBN eggs - but she could be just fat, as you say, though I hope not:p

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
