Hey all,

Thanks to everyone who responded to my last post. I have another question:
This weekend I went to a friend's house and noticed that his two newts of the same species were considerably larger than mine. His are about 10 years old and almost 5 inches long (including tail), while mine is 3 years old and barely 3 inches long. Should this be attributed to the age difference? At what age do CFBs stop growing? Is my newt unusual in this respect? Is this a sign of poor health or malnutrition?
Any answers would heplp.
Thanks,
Heather

I think it´s very unlikely they are Cynops orientalis at that size...i may be wrong but they are likely to be Cynops pyrrhogaster. If i´m not mistaken certain locality/localities can be eassily mistaken with C.orientalis because they have the same coloration and belly pattern. C.pyrrhogaster can be even bigger. Age sure affects size, but 5 inches sounds way too big for C.orientalis. Just my opinion though.

3 inches sounds perfectly right for your animal. Mine are that size too, my male being slightly shorter.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
