My juvenile axie (about 17 cm long) has been resting at the top of his water on his side for a couple of days now. I've had him in the fridge, though he still looks the same.

He had eaten a fairly large worm before all this and I'm wondering if it was too big for him and he's taking a while to digest it.

Any ideas or suggestions? I think I'll put him back in the fridge for another day and see how he is on Saturday night.

This picture's not brilliant but it gives some idea.

you need to lower the water so as it just covers his back, that way his feet can rest on the floor and prevent floating. dont forget to use clean dechlorinated water daily, keep a spare bottle in the fridge with him.
also cover the container with a dark cloth to stop the light and temp fluctuations.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
