My axolotl seems to have a chunk missing off the end of his tail. I noticed about a week ago that the end of his tail (the see through fin) had a small slice in it and thought it would just heal itself. Now instead of his tail being pointed its straight up and down. The fin on his tail seems to have receded to his tail. Hes white so i can see quite clearly that there is now no fin on the end of his tail. Will it heal itself or do i need to get something to put in the water? What do I do?!! please help.

One of my axolotl would loose the tip of her tail. In her case the tip would grow to just over a cm and it looked very very thin, this would then develope at some point a small tare and then the tip would disappear. I never needed to do anything with it. Axolotl have super powers and can re-generate tail tips, complete tails and limbs. Just keep an eye on it in case anything else occurs but your axolotl should be fine.

Any idea how it happened? These kinds of things can be caused by being bitten by another axolotl or, rarely, by a tail being caught in a filter intake. Do what you can to reduce the risk of it happening again.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
