Okay, I know if the tail is curved and the gills are forward the axolotl is stressed. By gills, does it mean just the feathery bit?? or the whole stem that they are on?? Both mine have straight tails and the stork bits are up and the feathery bits of the gills are pointed back? I hope that makes sense?? I have tried to look at pictures but am a bit confused if its just the feathery bit or the stem itself as well???

my two must have had their gills partially chomped at some stage because 1 on each always seems to point forwards.. or a birth defect, not that I care. if mine get stressed he whole kit and caboodle points forwards, it almost looks like they are trying to cover their eyes, and the tail with mine i have noticed it curls at the end.. like holding your finger upright then bending it from the first joint at the tip, that sort of angle. other axies may curl their whole tail, but that is what mine do. ( not that they have done it in ages LOL)

Thanks for that, I think its just the way they sit when just hanging out! I have only had them since Thursday so its all new to me.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
