can i use an external filter?

my friend says they are good as every hour or so it take some water out filters it through sponge, carbon & something els the puts the clean water back in

Would this be ok?

Thanks

Could you please give a besser description of this "filter"?
I have not heard of a filter that takes some water out every hour - aquarium filters have to be running all the time, constantly cycling the water. Otherwise you will not have any living bacterias in it for they need a constant supply of oxygen.

Carbon should only be used for a short time in case you want to remove any leftovers from medication or special chemicals. Carbon works like some kind of catalyst - chemicals are bound to the carbon, but not degraded. So if the carbons capacity is filled up it will release any bound chemicals back into the water again.

I will try & find more info
I am not sure if she ment hourly or if it was constant, i will get back to you

Thank you

xx

yes you can use an external filter, just be sure as you would do with any filter to make sure the flow back into the tank is not too strong for the axolotls. This can be reduced by directing the outflow towards the sides of the tank

I am a fan of external; filters for all but the smallest tanks. They have large media capacity, great flow rates, and can pull a great deal of waste. They are also easy to clean with minimal disruption to the tank. The downside is the flowrate though. As long as you can divert the effluent so as not to disturb your creatures, that are the best in my opinion.

I am going to have a look the weekend but i will let you know how i get on

Thanks

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
