Today I noticed some little whiteish/redish bugs crawling around my tiger's cage. They are about the size of a pinhead, if not smaller, and almost look like little spiders. I am not sure what they are or if they are harmful. Any ideas?

Probably non-parasitic mites. When was the last time you changed the substrate?

I changed the substrate in early November. The previous substrate was a 50/50 mix of coco fiber and soil I had bought from wal-mart. Now I have mostly coco fiber with a little bit of soil mixed in. Could the mites have come from the soil I bought?

Mites are everywhere. Right now there's some on you. Don't worry. If you see quite a few on the substrate just change it out.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
