The surface of my fire belly tank has developed an oily kind of skin or film over the water. I don't know what causes it and am worried that extra water changes will exacerbate the situation. The water is filtered by an elite stingray 10 with carbon filters. I am using bogwood, planted wood and some rocks to make the island for the newts. They seem to be fine but this film certainly doesn't look like it's a good thing.

Does anybody know what this is?

This has come up numerous times. I think the general consensus is that it's just a buildup of protein and things in the water. If you're not agitating the water's surface, you can also have dust settle on top of the water. Try adding an airstone or directing your filter output at the surface of the water.

Nice and easy method is to briefly, for a few seconds, lay a sheet of newspaper on the water then gently remove it....it will take all the film off with it.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
