Hi all, im Paul from sydney, i brought 3 axos about 1 month ago, however 1 of the axos i bought didnt have gills, they have grown a little bit over the past 3 to 4 week and i was thinking that one was getting better. they all eat very well worm, raw steak and small guppies. However the smallest one with alomst no gills hasnt eaten for 3 days, he is become more sluggies in the tank and today and yesterday we had a couple of really hot days and i was only able to keep the temp down to 22 on both days. today and last night, ive noticed the unwell axo floating around the top and swimming erracticly he has turn from white in colour to a real pinkish colour, this afternoon i put him in a small container with 5cm of water from his tank and place him in the fridge, he has been in the fridge now for about an hour, please help me i dont know what to do. also all the water parameters are perfect i check them 3 times a week. 6.5 Ph 0 amonium 0 nitrate.

HELP:mad:

Hi Paul

You've mentioned ammonia and nitrates? Did you test for nitrites at all?

As for your axolotl, leave him in the fridge, this may help him. Did you put a bottle of dechlorinated water in the fridge as you will need to do 100% waterchanges on his container daily. He may have more problems due to lack of gill filaments which is probably why he is near the top of the tank floating trying to get oxygen. Warm water also has less oxygen. The reddening tail/body usually shows when they're stressed by water or temperature rises.

You should also raise your water level a bit more to 3/4 of the tank height.

Do you breed your own guppies or did you purchase them directly from the petshop and if so did you quarantine them for minimum of 30 days?
