Hi!

I am happily watching my 4 Chinese Firebelly babies grow- the oldest one is about 4 months old, now.I'm a bit concerned that they have not morphed yet, thinking it would be at the 3 month mark. They still have their gills and are remaining fully aquatic. They seem to be growing nicely and have a really nice colour. Should I be worried?

I don't know how long cfbs take to morph, but if they look healthy and are growing nicely, I wouldn't be too concerned; I'd just sit back and wait until they're ready. I have 20 alpine newts I raised from eggs, that hatched last year, and a couple slowpokes still have gills.

Age is not the most important factor. It´s size. You can expect them to start morphing once they are around 3,5-4 cm long.

japanese fire belly newts

ok my first time with them one has morphed over night and happily relaxing on the rocks out of the water i gave him/her a white worm witch he/she ate was wondering what else can you feed a newly morphed newt?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
