Hello Everybody

Can anyone give me some advice on lighting, please? My tank sits in the room where not a lot of natural daylight reaches it (to avoid direct sunlight). At the moment I have the lighting system set up to come on at 11.30; this then changes to moonlight at 18.30 until 22.30 when the lights go off completely. Is this too much or too little?

Cheers

We need a bit more information before an answer is feasible.

What type of lighting are you using? Metal halide, Compact Fluorescent (CFL), T8, T5 etc.??

What wattage?

What spectrum, ie 6,500k, 10K etc.

What is in your tank?

All these factors need to be considered. Some plants and animals like direct bright light, others like diffuse light. Additionally, remember that increased photoperiod will not make up for low wattage or poor spectrum light. Please provide some more details and my guess is you will get lots of suggestions.

Hello

I have an Arcadia Overtank Luminaire (36") with 4 T5 tubes from memory they are 39w each. I have two fire belly newts and the tank is densely planted. I keep the water about 10" deep - Tank is 36" x 14" x 24"high. Hope this helps

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
