Today I noticed my newt swimming rapidly at the surface of the water. It was like something was chasing her. I think she was looking for some type of land because she finally stopped when she wedged herself between the filter and side of the tank. I don't think she was trying to get some air. My male seemed fine while this was happening. What do you think is wrong?

I don't think that behavior is too unusual. Do you have a land area for them? Sometimes they may just want to get out of the water, or possibly she is looking to hide from the male's advances?

What species? Has this newt been living happily in the water prior to this? Is there any possibility of water quality issues, such as ammonia or a recent water change?

They are t. grans. They've seemed to have been doing fine. And I did do a recent water change. She seems fine now.

Hi,
during the mating season my granulosa females often flee out of the water (they don't do this any other time of the year). The males amplex them very aggressiv, I think they need some time to recover.

I think this is 'normal' as far as newts go. I make sure to put lots of haul outs that stick out of the water along the edges of the tank, which stops the 'freak outs'.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
