Whitebait as food?

I tried my Axolotls on whitebait last night; got a couple to take it (over all they didn't seem that impressed with it).

One of my Gold Axolotls will eat just about anything; so she doesn't count. I'll try them again in a month or so -keep it as a treat; and for when I can't get many earth worms.

Frozen fish isn't a good food for axolotls as it contains high levels thiaminase which can cause thiamine deficiencies.

Oh, OK - Thanks Kaysie - I'll hold off on the frozen stuff. Been reading a couple of threads about breeding feeder fish, might look at giving that a try.

The fact that there is no Thiamine means you can't use it as a staple food you can use it as a treat. If you feed enough other foods (containing thiamine) this is no problem.

Hi Phil,

Before you add feeder fish please have a look at the gill damage in the sick axie part of the forum there is a new thread there today.

boil whitebait

frozen whtebait is ok if its been boiled as this kills the thiaminase, this info i got from a vet when i took a snake in whith a deficincy

...gone off the whitebait idea - it was a little too smelly! :) ...didn't notice the your reply Ian - I'll have a look at that Gill Damage thread now. Cheers, Phil

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
