Hello all.
I just set up a tank for salamanders...i have wanted some for a while and finally have set up a tank for them. I have never had salamanders but i have had my share of newts, frogs, lizards so forth and so on.. So i was all excited about finally getting a salamander or 2, went to a few pet shops and to my surprise... no ones carries them anymore:confused:?!?!?!!?! help. The one place said they can special order them and that they should have some in by summer... but its the end of march. ugh any advice on places that carry them. i was looking towards the tiger salamander.
thanks

One of the reasons salamanders are rare this time of year is that many are taken from the wild, and it's too cold in the winter. For instance, essentially all tiger salamanders are wild caught, so they are seasonal. Another reason you may have trouble finding species is because of state laws. I know Tiger sals are now illegal or require permits in CA, PA, and MD. So if you want one now, you could try online vendors like or posting below. Depending where you live, there's always the fun route of finding your own in the wild.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
