Hi, my axie has a rather bloated tummy and hasn't pooed since we got him (i think) which was over a week ago, i'm concerned that he may be constipated, does anyone know if there is anything I can give him (either special food or medicine) to relive this?
thanks
Alison

What have you been feeding him?
Do you have gravel in the tank or did the previous keeper have gravel?
A spell in the fridge can sometimes help this sort of thing.

I've been feeding him earthworms
the substrate I have got is a course sand and at the shop he was in a bare bottomed aquarium, before that I have no idea.
as for putting him in the fridge, I have read lots of threads on this, so have a fair idea what to do expect....how easy are they to catch:eek:

Many thanks

They are very slimy to touch . I have just used my hand to catch mine. I slip my hand under their bellies and gently grasp them. They may struggle a little and sometimes I have let them go, waited for a few minutes for them to settle then try again. I usually keep the container I am putting them into floating on the waters surface with some tank water in it, so its close enough to just pop them into. Make sure your hands are free of detergents/chemicals and that rings are removed to you don't damage the axolotls skin.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a go. must say I feel a little nervous, I'll have to steady my nerves before I try as I don't want to be too jumpy:eek:

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
