Have you checked your water, ammonia-nitrite-nitrate-temperature?
These things need to be kept right or else they can cause serious problems.
If you havent i suggest you remove him to a container of dechlorinated water and put him somewhere cool.
Preferably the fridge until you do.
If he has swalled something the lowered temperature can help him pass it. It will also releive any stress he is feeling.
Dont forget to cover the container and use dechlorinated water.Pop a spare bottle in with him so it is the same temperature for water changes.
Let us know what your water parameters are and we may be able to help a bit more.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
