Hello, I have a spotted salamander about 6 inches long. Any advice on a cage setup, thanks

I would think their care would be some what similar to tiger salamanders. They're mole salamanders, so provide them with a deep, substrate that they can burrow in. Keep one end moist and leave the other alone. Also, make sure there is good ventilation. Make sure the substrate does not have a low Ph like peat moss. Try something like coconut fiber. Two can probably be housed in a 20 gallon. And provide hides.

Just to add on, the substrate does not necessarily need to be very deep as A.maculatum do not actively dig their own burrows in the manner that tiger salamanders do (They tend to take advantage of pre-existing cracks and crevices). I use a mixture of soil and cocofiber for the substrate. Pieces of cork bark or half logs make excellent hides for them. Good luck!:D

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
