hey just wandering if anybody knew of a permanent way to keep temperature down i just notice mine keeps creeping to 22 23 kind of thing which isn't too bad but id just rather it didn't i normally go and make a cool box or plop him in the fridge but i have a busy schedule and its not great on a daily / weekly basis anybody know of simple solutions that might save me here?

all replies appreciated :D
(this is for axies btw XD)

i also heard regularly puting an axie in a fridge with out it being sick or something wasnt good to do on a regular basis. what is a cool box? if you arent already, use ice packs or bottles, this works good for me. if you have a basement and the tanks not down there already it would be a little cooler down there.

Owner of Satch: what is the ambient temperature in the room where the aquarium is? Using a screen lid (instead of a hood), a non-power filter, and perhaps adding a fan could keep the water temp below ambient. See:

Hi lazymut
A screen lid is a covering that is made of mesh , like insect screens for your windows. It allows more air in but does not let your axie escape . Tanks with hoods or tight fitting glass covers can trap some of the heat in , causing a temp rise.

One of the photos in the article I gave the link to shows a screen lid (one corner of it anyway). Here's another example:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=6016+10931+7796&pcatid=7796
The difficulties with screen lids are (1) it's not easy to find the hinged ones (2) it's difficult to engineer a light and filter with unhinged ones (3) some filters (hang-on-back types) won't work with a screen lid.

Another approach is to try to increase the ventilation that passes through your hood lid. See:
http://www.caudata.org/photoplog/index.php?n=683
http://www.caudata.org/photoplog/index.php?n=682
But in my experience, these small ventilations are not nearly as effective as using a screen, or just leaving the hood open. With an axie, you might be able to leave the hood open if you drop the water level down several inches from the top.

thanks alot !!!
(p.s when will you be accepting invitations into the public user groups? been waiting for axie enthusiast for a while :) )

thanks again!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
