Hi, all. My brother and I ordered some red-spotted newts from Ward's, and they arrived today. One was dead, one's a bit thin, and one appears to be all right. I'm not completely sure, though, whether they're adults or babies. They're fragile and pretty small, I guess about 2 1/2 inches... However, I've heard that adults could be this small... I don't know. If anyone could look at these pictures and enlighten me, I'd really appreciate it. I need to know how to take care of them properly. Also, If they are babies, how big of a water area should I have? Thank you so much!

You can be reasonably sure that the animals Ward's sells are adults due to their harvesting practices. A good starting place for red spotted newt care can be found in Caudata Culture, here.

You've been planning on receiving these animals for a while now, shouldn't you have thought to look for this information before?

Actually, I've been researching these newts every day. The only thing I'm confused about is that I was told that Ward's usually sells adults, but these look too small to be adults. I specifically asked for efts, and so they very well may be. They aren't taking to the water, so I figure they might be terrestrial. I know quite well how to take care of them, either way, but I just want to know exactly what it is I'm taking care of.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
