Hello Everyone!

My Chinese Firebelly terrestrial juveniles ( they morphed nearly 3 months ago) seem to be doing very well. I have 4- one that is certainly the largest, one that is the baby ( probably morphed last) and two that appear healthy and are somewhere in between those sizes. Their colouring is good- the baby that was very pale on its belly to begin with has since changed to a brighter red like the others. My question to you is that I don't know if they are eating every day. Is this something to be concerned about? I put live blackworms on their rock every day, and add a few to the water ( 3 of my newts also seem to be becoming more aquatic lately) but I only see them eat sometimes, and it's not every day. I know my adult newts eat every other day, but I thought that the little ones would need to eat daily. Is this something to be concerned about?

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering if someone may be able to help me out with my question. I just bought some new worms for my newts yesterday which they normally would be eager to eat, but they didn't seem interested in them while I was looking. Again, they look healthy and happy- perhaps they are eating when i'm not looking? Another thing to mention that may be of importance is that they do seem to be becoming more and more aquatic whereas before they were almost always terrestrial.

Your feedback is always appreciated!

Thank-you!

The size differences you see are fairly typical. In theory it's best if they eat every day, but it's often hard to know for sure if they are eating at all. It's not uncommon for them to "freeze" when you are watching. The ones that go in the water are probably getting the blackworms on their own. It sounds like you are doing all the right things.

Thanks for your reply!

Just a couple more things for now:

1. If 3 out of my 4 babies are now spending more time in the water, may I increase the water level? I only have it at about an inch and a half right now.

2. May I begin to use a filter for the tank now ( if I am able to increase the water level) or is it still too soon? They are awfully small still.

Thanks again!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
