A picture would be much more helpful. If you can't give a photo, a much more detailed description is needed.

Also please tell us how long ago the newts were acquired.

For recently-acquired newts, particularly ones that come from pet stores, there is a two-fold very high risk of disease during the first month or two: first, they have been traumatized by the whole import/retail procedure, in which they are put under stress and exposed to the germs of other animals. And second, they are usually put into a new tank, which can often suffer "new tank syndrome" (see FAQ, link in my sig).

There are non-disease reasons that a newt might have a white spot, but since they are recent newts, you need to be vigilant for signs of disease. We still need a better description.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
