I understand they're illegal in New Jersey and California
but WHY???
Are they endangered?
Do they get salmonella?
I'm so confused!

I'm no expert but I do know:

They are endangered, BUT if they are set free and mate they create a large pest problem. I've also heard that they also can survive in sewage environments as they like the dark, etc, so they have the ability to breed in sewers. I'm not sure if this latter tidbit is true but these are the reasons.

The reason (in California anyways) is to protect the native California Tiger Salamander. All members of the same family are illegal here in CA because they can possibly breed with the native salamander and create hybrids that have been known to survive better than the California tiger sal. They are big on protecting the native species here in California.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
