When I was growing up my Dads pond attracted many newts and frogs, yet they don't seem interested in mine. We both live on the outskirts of London (although different sides) and both ponds have fish and running water in the form of a waterfall. Any idea's?

Hello Ali,

It could be a list of factors, however the general ones might be:

- Lack of food or the inverse; there is food available but there are too many competitors that are consuming the same source
- Predators
- Inhabitable environment, i.e. inadequate breeding ground(s) and pollution (whether is be noise, chemical etc.)
- The newts/frogs are attaining a food source from another different location

That's about all I can list off the top of my head. Perhaps you could some research on the natural habitat of these newts and frogs and then try to mimic the habitat. Good luck!

how tall is your pond (if raised at all?)
my dads pond used to have all the types of newt's in it and when i was little we used to catch them. i think i would be arrested now, as i know you cant handle some of them without a licence.

but when he did some work on it and raised it a little higher (it was about a foot above ground, then added about a extra 6 inches)
they stoped comming :(. he had fish in the pond as well. we still got frogs and stuff, just never the newts anymore. and that was the london suburbs.

I hav wild newts in my pond and i hav 2 killer cats so it might hav somethin 2 do with food so this is how u get some

1.in the summer get a jar and a piece of peeled fruit (apple or orange)

2.fill the jar with water from youre pond and place the fruit in

3. plaice the jar in a shady place were youre cat cant get 2 it

4. wait and check on it every week or so,soon bugs will be attracted 2 th mixture and they will come and lay eggs
5.wait till the eggs hatch and produce mosqiuto larvae or egg rafters
6.empty the jar of critters into youre pond
i do this with about 10 jars and it works for me

hope i helped chris

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
