Hi all! I'm new here and have a few questions. My sister bought my daughter what we thought were 3 axolotls but may actually be tiger salamanders. :eek:They seem to be very "lazy" and will swim around occaisionally, esp when it is feeding time. All 3 are males and are in a 20 gallon aquarium. I didn't know much about them until reading here but have been "cycling" the tank as best I can. (read the directions and am working on lowering the amonia with 20% daily water changes). The small one, Cougar, is a dark solid brown color. Mike, the middle one is also dark brown and has a few black colorations near his belly. Spike, the biggest one is also dark brown and has "leopard type" spots. Can someone please give me an opinion on what you think they actually are?

Thanks for your help!;)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
