I want to introduce myself and my axolotl's- my son bought 2 albino axolotl's from a pet store last winter. After a few months we found out that they were a male/female pair as eggs were everywhere (about 400 of them), and they were fertile!!!!! On March 15 they hatched... unfortunately we lost quite a few of them as the first batch was very much a learning process.. but after trial and error, we have 10 babies (well.. getting bigger and bigger.. "small adults" now)... they are SOO cute!! My son is out on his own and has the mom and dad, and now we decided that made me a grandmother now  and I have "custody" of 8 of the babies.. my son's roommate took two of them for himself... they are just ADORABLE!! I can't stop watching them, they are just amazing creatures! We aren't strangers to "different" animals.. my son has always been into reptiles and other animals- a blue tongue skink we have had since he was about 12 (6 years or so??), we had fire bellied newts at one time, different lizards (from bearded dragons to an iguana to many other toads, lizards, etc..), 2 ferrets, and now we just have the axy's, 1 dog Sheeba, and 2 cats Pumpkin and Casey (OK.. and my twin daughters.. :talker::p)... One of the baby's was not doing well last week and thanks to this site I was able to help it "burp" and now it's not floating and looking ill anymore.. so I decided to join in here to learn more and raise some healthy happy axy babies!! Thanks for having this forum- it may have saved my little baby last weekend!! Cheers! Valerie

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
