I just got a new salamander which in the store was called a water-dog, but one of the workers said it was a Tiger Salamander larvae. I was doing research for tiger salamanders so I could take better care of him, but in that process I have found that they get easily confused with Axolotl... And then I looked axolotl up, and found he looks an awful lot like those too. They were selling adult tiger salamanders too, but the "water-dogs" sold very quickly so I don't think they raised them. He's about 6 inches long, though what I've looked up size does not really seem to have much to do with it.

My question is this... Just what do I have?

And as a little fact 'cause I'm proud of him either way, I named him Leon. "You are what you eat." Okay, too much Resident Evil 4 for me. :p

It is a tiger salamander. You can expect it to transform and need to go on land.

Thank you! That's very good to know. I had put a piece of rock that juts above water in there just in case, and it looks like he'll need it. I'll further my research into tiger salamanders then. ^.^

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
