Today’s top tip. Next time you’re at the DIY store, head for the builders yard and ask if they have any broken tiles or flooring. That’s what I did at B&Q today and look what I got…

A whole pile of natural slate – for free!

You jammy so and so. Well thought of though, considering what the shops who sell this stuff for aquariums try to ask for it.

Wow, what a good idea, I was just planning a trip to the slate mines ....this would be so much more affordable.
Thanks.

You can do it if you B & Q it.

Those living in Wales can probably go to a local beach and pick it up for free (and maybe some drift wood and ground down glass / bits of plate that can be pretty)!! It is a by product of mining anyway and isn't supposed to be there. I wouldnt advocate taking anything from the beach that is supposed to be there though.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
