I have two baby newts that I found almost 2 months ago in my tank. One was slightly smaller when I found them but they are now about the same size. The first one I found seems close to metamorphosis-has significantly smaller gills, a more defined tail (there is no fin left to it, it now looks like an adult newt tail) and has turned black with a red belly. The other newt is usually brown, but changes from day to day and I have seen him go from black (like the other newt) to almost white. His gills have shrunk very little and his tail still looks just like it did when I first found him (lots of fin). He is growing at the same rate as the other newt, acts the same, eats the same, everything...so I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with him. Has anyone else had this happen? Is it normal?

He is actually might lighter than the picture shows, and he was black last night. His gills are always black- they do not change.
