My axies laid eggs about a month ago and just made ANOTHER batch, is this normal or are they just madly in love?

From what I know, a female and male axolotl will keep breeding on a regular basis until you seperate them.
However I have heard they are more likely to breed in the spring than colder seasons like autumn and winter.
My axolotls laid two batches about a month between as well.
I think it depends on the amount of spermaphores your male is producing and whether your female is ready to produce eggs.

Hi Leanne,

My axololts are heavy breeders, too. They lay eggs every three weeks. They started in April and haven't stopped yet. I believe that some strains of axolotls are simply prolific breeders; considering that their ancestors were lab specimens, this makes sense to me.

Fortunately my female is fully adult and quite robust; nevertheless, I will be separating the two permanently soon. It is a lot of hard work for her to create so many eggs so often.

That is extremely hard on the female's body. Producing and laying eggs so often robs their body of necessary nutrients and can lead to problems down the road. Ideally they should have a 4-5 month 'rest' in between spawnings.

I agree totally. I should have added that I had separated my two as soon as I could get a second aquarium set up. They are back together again as the larvae from the first clutch are in the first tank now - and they are still producing eggs. I had hoped that they would have a breeding season, and that it would be over. I just didn't want to write all of this in my previous reply.

So: Leanne, it is not abnormal for your axolotls to breed more or less monthly. It takes a lot out of the female, though, so that you may want to consider separating them.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
