I bought a new axie today, a little boy leucistic. He is so skinny in yellow water at the pet shop, he was in a heated 2ft tank warm to the touch, with 8 Medium size Angel fish and 3 Very Large Silver dollar fish. As you can guess he has no gills left except for 1-2 little filaments, some stuby toes and a pretty munched on tail. I couldn't leave him there to suffer like that, so now I have another sick axie .

I love theese little guys, I can't stand to think how many are out there being mistreated. He is now in his own 2ft tank and we will see how he goes he dosen't look real good but I have faith in the little guy. I will keep you all posted with pics.

Should I consider salt bathing him as the water he came in smelt putrid and he has wounds ??? Just a thought.
Cheers Nat

Hi Nat,

Now, you do know that by buying the little fellow, you've only encouraged the store to get more and that they will keep them in the same way, right? Ok enough nagging - your new pet is definitely lucky to have you!

Personally, I would apply tea baths instead of a salt bath as salt is so painful. Black tea is also an astringet and can help clean wounds. You can find detailed information about tea baths here (scroll midway down the page):

Good luck to you both,

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
