Hi guys,

My axolotl has just started developing the 'mane' thing on its gills and I noticed there about 3 white dots on the right side of his gills. I'm just curious if it is natural or happens to be the gills when they're growing or whether it is fungus. I know he's a little too small at this point for us all to be certain what it is. I figured I'd keep an eye on those 3 dots. I appreciate it if anyone can give me some info on it. Thanks!

Nor can I. What do you mean it just started 'developing the mane thing'? If you mean the red gill filaments, those should have always been there. If they weren't, there may be something wrong.

Yes the red filaments, when I first got him he was like this. So those red filaments weren't really growing yet. So I've circled the location of the dots in this photo and also added in a photo of him when he was younger.

So it could be just me because he is starting to grow more of those red filaments on him.

The photo of your axolotl when smaller shows no filaments, this suggests he was exposed to poor water conditions before you got him and he now looks a lot better. One of my axolotls had gill damage from a bite and the top of the gill died off and the regenerating point was a white blob for several weeks.

Keep an eye on him but for now don't worry too much. An axolotl growing gill filaments is better than one loosing them!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
