Hi there,
since I got my Axies in July, my leucistic axie developed
many dark spots around her face (and back) and
she is getting darker and darker....

I have seen others here have or had the same "problem".
She came from a litter with leucistic and wild coloured offspring.
Is this normal in such a litter that the leucistic develop dark spots?

is it connected to gender/hormones?

Are the dark spots of any importance (health, behaviour) to the animal?

Anyone who would like to share some experiences?

:D

Hi Ellen,

I've got some good news for you...

There is no "problem" at all and the markings are perfectly natural. ;)

I didn't notice any change to my leucistic's behaviour when her freckles developed - she's still as greedy, sneaky, pushy, snappy as she ever was as a juvenile...

As they grow and age, they will develop 'freckles'. This is perfectly normal, and happens to (almost) all leucistic axolotls.

My Squishy was almost completely white when I got her and now her whole face is covered in her beautiful black freckles, I agree it makes her eyes look so intense and pretty. Just consider it another unique and wonderful thing about your baby!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
