Hi all, I just wanted to send a quick post to say a big, big, big THANK YOU.
I've had my white axie, Sooty, for 2 years now with no trouble at all until about 4 weeks ago when she decided to stop eating. I thought maybe she was going through those awkward teenage years where she thought that she was too fat and had succumbed to peer pressure and fashion magazines dictating what size she should be. I soon decided that was silly and consulted Google.
I found your website and read your threads your worries regarding your sick axolotls. I read your suggestions and remedies and learnt so much about my Sooty and why she wasn't eating.
You see, my boyfriend and I did something very well meaning for Sooty which was also very STUPID several weeks ago. She hadn't eaten for a few days so I panicked. It's winter here so we though she was cold. We thought "Hey, Axolotls are from Mexico, it's warm there... surely we should buy her a heater?"
So, she stopped eating. She got skinny. She even allowed me to pick her up and hold her without biting me. Ok, I got worried, I have grown very attached to her and think she is beautiful (even when my friends tease her and say she looks like a male appendage ;)). I read your threads and discovered that a heater is a stupid idea and quickly removed it. I've put heaps of ice cubes in her tank, and within 2 days she was back to her usual self: eating anything dangled in front of her and being active. She doesn't want a cuddle, which indicates that she has recovered!
I have learnt a lot from this site and glad I found it. Sooty could be dead and I have you guys to thank for saving her (...but me to blame for nearly killing her....) Seriously though, thanks :D!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
