I know it might be a bit early...
my axie "Suzie" is around 6months old and 12cm long now.
I realized that "she" has some "bulges" behind her legs....
are these the male bulges or is it "normal"?
Curiousity!:D

Hi Ellen,

I'm afraid you may be jumping the gun as females do have a slight bump, whereas males have a significant bulge.

I would say Suzie is a girl at this stage, but she 'may' be a slow developing male ;).

Thanks Havelock.
It is just that Suzie looks different from Max, my other axie...
"she" has definitely a bigger bulge than Max...
:D
Have a look:
(Max is from the same litter but bigger, "he" is already 15cm long)

I would wait a bit longer to see if the 'bulge' gets any bigger. But I agree with Jacq, I would say its a girl. Like humans, some bits on some people are bigger then bits on others lol.

For what it's worth, I think they both look like girls.

They both look the same as my 2. Mine are a year old and both females.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
