Hello. I am new to the forum, not to mention the world of amphibians. I am interested in keeping a primarily aquatic newt, so I hope to get lots of advice and information from this site/forum.

Thanks! I have enjoyed all the pictures and videos I have seen so far!!

Welcome to the forum! Have you got any ideas on what you might like to keep?

I just started reading Chris Mattison's Keeping and Breeding Amphibians. I have limited knowledge (= none) about the different types. To my understanding there are some that are mainly aquatic, which is preferred since the new addition to our family will be kept in my son's room (a toddler). Aside from that, something pretty or interesting in color would be nice (isn't that just like a woman!! ;-))

Welcome Amy
Sounds like youre off to a good start. Research is always the best. When you get a better idea of what youre thinking about post it and you will surely get lots of insight.

Best of Luck,
Alex

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
