Hi there! Is it ok to feed my axies with scallops once in a while? ( Not the outer shell, obviously..)

Scallops pull apart into nice worm size bits and these go down well. As a once in a while food this is no problem. I try to make sure my axolotls get at least 50% worms to maintain a balance of vitamins and minerals.

Scallops are probably better balanced nutrient wise than sliced beef heart but may lack some vitamins and calcium (except in that shell which isn't eaten;)).
 
Thanks Oceanblue! My axies will be getting some scallops from now on as a bit of variety to their normal diet once in a while :) . Among other things I feed them, I make sure they get their vitamins by feeding them axolotl pellets every week, which should have all in :)
 
May I be your axolotl? Please? Pretty please? Scallops cost about 80 Euros a kilo here. Your axolotls are so lucky!

They are a luxury food here as well, but only about 30 euros per Kg. Occasionally they are a lot cheaper.

Worms, slugs and woodlice win as free food and usually I eat scallops and give the axolotls the worms.

Paring off a small piece of food from food for human consumption is often a good way of cutting costs to feed a pet, even if the food is expensive.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
