hi. Just joined. I have 2 axalotals and recentley one of them as lost its front legs. he is about 13 years old.Is this normal or is something wrong with him.

Hi Rich,

Axolotls don't lose their legs by chance - something will have removed them (i.e.,m bit them off). Do you have other animals in the same tank with the legless one?

P.S. Welcome to the Forum!

This mostly a question, not an introduction, so I'll move it to the axolotl section of the forum. You will get better help there.

It's not normal for an axie to lose its legs. Limb rot is possible, but it's more often the case that they are bitten off by another axie. If this is possible, I would recommend isolating him in a separate tank.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
