On and off for the past few months I have noticed my black axolotles have intermittently developed what appears to be a full body haze to their skin leaving them a slate grey colour. In small sections it appears to be coming off like it is peeling(and skin underneath looks fine). One is exremely thin and not eating whilst the other seems very healthy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated:)

A photo would be helpful if you can get one  Also, what are your levels on Nitrate/Nitrite, Ammonia, pH..?

Hi Riffy,

Axolotls sometimes shed their skin; it does not necessarily indicate a problem. It is also much more noticeable on dark axolotls than on the lighter ones.

You can expedite the process by giving a tea bath each day - more info on tea baths towards the bottom of this page:

P.S. And as Stef wrote, it would be helpful to know what your water parameters are, particularly as one of your axolotls is not eating.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
