Hi. Love newts and am trying to get some for my aquarium in my classroom. I teach 5th grade. The kids keep asking when I'm going to put something in my 30-gallon (all they see now is a beautiful tank with running water). I used to buy them in department stores like Wal-Mart. Now, I can't seem to find newts. Probably looking for a Chinese firebellied, something economical. I had as many as 13 and they lived for years and years. Even had one baby newt. If someone can help me find some newts, I'd be grateful. :D

Thanks, Will. The clown loach is my favorite aquarial fish. They have character and seem to be the only fish adept at playing possum. They still give me a start when I see them lying side by side under a rock--on their sides. The other loaches are equally quirky. Now, if I could just find some newts... What do you think happened to their availability in pet shops and stores?

Hi Theoden,

Amphibians in general are having tough times throughout the world these days. Laws have become very strict regarding capturing, possessing, and selling caudates and that is surely why you are seeing so much fewer of them for sale.

Welcome to the Forum (I'm from Lousisiana, too :D ).

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
