Hello everyone. I have just joined your forums. I am a middle school science teacher starting her first paludarium. I don't have any experience with amphibians or fish, but was donated a 45 gallon aquarium from a generous parent. My students and I are in the process of designing our setup and will begin construction next week. I have decided to go with the "great stuff" route. We have an idea of which animals we would like to put in the paludarium if possible. Of course my students have picked out the cutest ones out there so I'm quite sure that they're not normally found in the same ecosystem or even the same continent! We are looking at axolotls, red clawed crabs, puffer fish, and apple snails so far. We haven't purchased anything and are still researching to see if any of these things will have problems cohabitating together. If you have any suggestions, I'd certainly be open to them as I want a successful project. Thanks for all the help I've already received from reading past posts on your forum!

Okay, thanks. I'm still doing my research! While cute, I just may have to nix the axolotl idea.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
